What To Expect

Generally speaking, construction is a messy and, often stressful, adventure. It can be hard to see your biggest asset, your castle, in the middle of a construction project. No matter how excited you are for the end product, it is challenging to live in a construction zone. Here are some tips and thoughts on how to prepare.

  • How can we help get ready for work to be done?

    • Small things make big differences. Make sure that all your personal belongings are moved out of the space(s) we will be working on. This includes pictures, wall decorations and most window coverings. But can also include clothing, rugs and bedding.

  • Is my whole house going to be dirty during construction?

    • We do everything we can to help prevent the construction from spreading out of the work area to the rest of the home. On every project we will set up site protection on the first day. This often includes floor protection in the traffic areas coming into and going out of the home, we will also put up plastic ‘walls’ as necessary to contain the work space. Some projects where more demolition and site prep is required we will also set up an air filtration system. It is important that we do our part to mitigate as much dust and debris as we can but it is also important to remember that construction is not clean and dust is sneaky and will find its way throughout your home.

  • My kitchen is about to be remodeled, what should I expect?

    • Kitchens are hands down the project that creates the most upheaval in a home, and the hardest to live through. A typical kitchen remodel can take between 5 and 6 weeks depending on your design choices and layout. Whether you are aware of it before the project or not, the kitchen is the lifeblood of a home. The first week will be exciting because everything is being removed and prepared to be rebuilt. By week 2 you’re still excited, but it is waning as you get tired of eating out for most meals. By week 4 you’re no longer excited to see us show up and you just want to be able to make your coffee in your kitchen and cook a good meal. We suggest having a game plan that involves both setting up a kitchenette in another part of the home, creating a space for making small snacks and meals at home, and pre-making some meals you can freeze and easily re-heat in a microwave. Some clients have found having a meal delivery service lined up has helped them cope with the project We have even had some clients set up an outdoor kitchen in the summer time. The idea is to plan ahead for a smoother construction period.

  • Do I need to get my permit before I hire a contractor?

    • It is entirely up to you. Some municipalities require your contractor to pick up the permit and provide licensing before it will be released. We are also happy to work with you to create a design and basic drawings and submit to your city building department on your behalf dealing with all questions and possible additional requirements they have to release permit. Level up has relationships with local architects and engineers that we can enlist to help take your idea and create a blueprint. Each project has its own unique requirements and needs and we will adapt, guide and adjust as needed.

  • How do I choose the finishes for my project?

    • The choices are overwhelming for most homeowners. We work with vendors and suppliers locally that will help you, and us, find what will work best for your project. We ask that all clients have some examples of things they like and we can go from there. Because we work with so many seasoned veterans of the industry we will help you choose the materials that are right for your home (and neighborhood), that will be able to maintain and care for within your comfort zone, and will help get you the best bang for your buck. Of course we will use any choices you have already made as well; so if you already know the colors, finishes and design we will work with that to level up your home.
